The light is on- from dusk till dawn. That is the goal of the SPIRIT control unit. And that is what the column is designed for. Depending on many factors, it will try to regulate the energy balance to commit to that promise.
Here comes the sun. The SPIRIT control unit has calculated based on the GPS location and astronomical data at what time sun rises. The battery is emptied up to 50% for perseverance (DoD 25-50%, depending on battery technology, location, availability and type) and ready to be charged.

The battery is quite full and will start charging in absorption. Later on in the afternoon, to complete the full charging it will charge the battery in float to get the most out of the sun's power.
Before sunset, the battery status will be determined just as the length of the night. The perfect lighting setting will be selected in order to keep the light on all night long.
The special-designed Alexia- or Anne-luminaire (DC) will be on for the rest of the night till sunrise. During the night a dimming profile may be active, depending on the desired dimming profile and/or the generated energy during the day to keep his main promise: keeping the light on.

Self-regulating
Via astronomical clock and GPS the control unit know exactly at time sun sets and rises, and so on which time the luminaire should be activated and what the length of the night is. The detailed information on the charge of the day, and the forecast for the upcoming days, will give input wheter the dimming program should be activated or not.
Self-preserving system
The control unit will make sure that all elements are preserved as good as possible. For example: The battery is charged by temperature-compensation if needed and the LED’s will be gradually activated if temperature is beyond the perseverance range.

Self-monitoring
The control unit is always accessible via Bluetooth Low-Energy to get insight on the data. This data can be transferred to the Control Room. Optionally, one can choose to use RF. All information is sent to the centralized gateway with a certain interval in time, which collects all data and visualizes it in the control room, without the physical attendance near the column.

Short range communication is facilitated via the SPIRIT supervisor app (Android). The app gives access to the control unit via Bluetooth low energy, a simple, reliable and safe communication technology for uploading the data from the control unit towards the SPIRIT control room and also have live insight on the performance. If preferred, configurations and settings can be changed via this access, as well as the opportunity is given to download newer software releases.
Optional is the Internet of Things connection with long range communication (LoRa, radiofrequency). The column can communicate via LoRa the current status, but also configurations can be adjusted. This is possible with a private gateway or an IoT network.
